The School of Communication is hiring in 2014. There are two positions that may be of interest to faculty doing work in communication technology.

1. Tenure-track assistant professor whose research and teaching focuses on the implications of social media for strategic and/or organizational communication. Candidates should employ an empirical, social scientific research approach, and may ground their research interests in any of a variety of areas of communication, such as health, political, interpersonal, or mass communication. 2. Tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor in the area of Communication Technology. Candidates may focus on computer-mediated communication (CMC), human-computer interaction (HCI), or specific subareas of communication technology, such as psychological aspects of user experiences, the effects of digital representations, or research specific to certain contexts of digital communication. Jodi Whitaker accepts position at U Arizona

Congratulations to Jodi Whitaker, who has just accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the U of Arizona.  Jodi will be continuing her fascinating work on video games there starting in August 2014.

CATS members honored at Comm Day

The CATS group was well-represented at the annual awards ceremony for the School of Communication. We're proud to announce the following awards bestowed upon our members:

• Ben Johnson, Ph.D. student, was recognized for his stellar research program with the Doris Gildea Senior Award.

• Margaret Rooney, Ph.D. student, was honored for her commitment to teaching with the Albert Warren Scholarship Award for Teaching. 

• Kelly Dillon, Ph.D. student, received the first annual Graduate Student Organization Peer Award for contributing to a supportive environment amongst grad students in the School of Communication.

• The much-deserving Dr. Dave Ewoldsen was awarded Faculty of the Year for his research, teaching, advising, and service contributions to the School. 

Congratulations to all the winners! We are fortunate to have such wonderful graduate students and faculty contributing to our research group.

Panel on where to publish tech-related work

Jesse Fox's research lab is hosting a 45-minute discussion/panel about how to select a journal to publish tech-related work. She has invited interested members of the broader CATS community to attend.

The panel will be held in JR216 starting at 10:30 on April 15.  (Note the change in location.  The meeting is now in Journalism, which should make it easier to attend the talk by Dr. Valkenburg and Colloquium.)

CATS-affiliated researchers in the news

John Dimmick, John Feaster, and Greg Hoplamazian's article in the current issue of New Media & Society is the subject of a recent post on Ars Technica, a popular tech-news site. In their article, Dimmick and colleagues take an ecological perspective when examining the potential displacement effects of mobile technologies on news consumers' consumption practices. They find that in 2007, when the time-diary data was collected, mobile technologies were being used to get news at times and in places where traditional media were largely absent. The journalist at Ars Technica summarizes the study and reflects on what this lack of displacement might mean.

Ohio State's School of Communication #1 in Research Production and #3 Overall in Field

The National Research Council’s (NRC) doctoral program assessments are out, and the results place The Ohio State University's School of Communication among the best in the nation. Among the 83 doctoral communication programs reviewed, our faculty was ranked #1 in absolute research activity. A composite ranking, based on 20 different criteria, placed the school at #3 in the field, alongside other top-ranked programs including Stanford University's Department of Communication, the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism & Mass Communication, and the Speech Communication program at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign (now the Department of Communication).
