Lee, Fox receive top-paper awards from ICA Communication & Technology division

Congratulations to OSU School of Communication Assistant Professors Roselyn Lee and Jesse Fox on their award-winning papers.  Lee's paper, "Virtual Stereotype Lift: Effects of Arbitrary Gender Representations on Quantitative Task Performance in Avatar-Represented Virtual Groups" (with Nass and Bailenson) and Fox's paper, "Immersive Virtual Environments That Promote Environmental Behaviors Also Encourage Indulgent Eating via the Licensing Effect" (with Ahn and Park) were both named top-four faculty papers by the Communication & Technology division at this year's ICA.

CATS members honored at Comm Day

The CATS group was well-represented at the annual awards ceremony for the School of Communication. We're proud to announce the following awards bestowed upon our members:

• Ben Johnson, Ph.D. student, was recognized for his stellar research program with the Doris Gildea Senior Award.

• Margaret Rooney, Ph.D. student, was honored for her commitment to teaching with the Albert Warren Scholarship Award for Teaching. 

• Kelly Dillon, Ph.D. student, received the first annual Graduate Student Organization Peer Award for contributing to a supportive environment amongst grad students in the School of Communication.

• The much-deserving Dr. Dave Ewoldsen was awarded Faculty of the Year for his research, teaching, advising, and service contributions to the School. 

Congratulations to all the winners! We are fortunate to have such wonderful graduate students and faculty contributing to our research group.

Van der Heide coauthors most-cited HCR article of 2010

Congratulations to Brandon Van der Heide on coauthoring the top-cited article of Human Communication Research in 2010. "The role of friends appearance and behavior on evaluations of individuals on Facebook: Are we known by the company we keep?" was coauthored by Joseph Walther, Brandon Van der Heide, Sang-Yeon Kim, Stephanie Tong (all of Michigan State U) and David Westerman (of West Viriginia U). Published in Human Communication Research 34:1 in 2008, the article was cited 23 times in 2010 and has been cited 37 times to date. Dr. Kelly Garrett is Recipient of 2009 McQuail Award

Our CATS research group member Kelly Garrett is the recipient of the ASCoR Denis McQuail Award 2009 and has been named a 2010-2011 ASCoR Honorary Fellow by the Amsterdam School of Communication Research.

Ohio State's School of Communication #1 in Research Production and #3 Overall in Field

The National Research Council’s (NRC) doctoral program assessments are out, and the results place The Ohio State University's School of Communication among the best in the nation. Among the 83 doctoral communication programs reviewed, our faculty was ranked #1 in absolute research activity. A composite ranking, based on 20 different criteria, placed the school at #3 in the field, alongside other top-ranked programs including Stanford University's Department of Communication, the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism & Mass Communication, and the Speech Communication program at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign (now the Department of Communication).

Facebook Fellowship

Facebook has announced its '10-'11 grad student fellowships. Social computing, including social media, social search, and collaborative environments, is listed among the topics the company is interested in supporting. The application deadline is February 15, and decisions will be announced on March 29. The application is short -- just a couple pages explaining the research and how it relates to Facebook -- and the Fellowships are generous.
